The Orange Standard Newspaper
The Orange Standard is the monthly newspaper of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland. Published digitally and free of charge, it carries news and stories from across the Orange Institution and the wider Orange Family.
Each month, more than 11,500 subscribers receive the paper by email, and many lodges pass it on to their members and friends through email, social media and direct messaging. New subscribers sign up every month.

Our history
The paper has its origins in a Press Committee set up by the Grand Orange Lodge in the early 1970s. The Committee was concerned by what it saw as one-sided coverage of Northern Ireland from republican sources, and in 1971 it reported to the Grand Lodge that much more needed to be done to put across the Protestant and Unionist perspective.
In June 1972 the Grand Lodge agreed to explore an official Orange publication, aimed not only at members but at the general public. The Orange Standard was launched in January 1973, with Rev. Canon Dr. S. E. Long and Dougie Sloan, a County Armagh newspaper editor, among the key figures in its formation and production. Priced at five pence, it was printed monthly and distributed across Northern Ireland.
Published without a break since 1973, the paper moved to a solely digital format in 2020, following the Covid-19 pandemic, and has been free to readers since.

Each issue includes features, such as Orange News, Sport, Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Ladies Lodges, Around the Lodges, Comment, Guest Writers, History, Faith and Opinion.
Who’s behind it
The current editor is Gary McAllister. Previous editors include the late Dougie Sloan, Billy Kennedy and Dr. David Hume. The paper is administered by a Board of Management, currently chaired by Wor. Bro. Ron Laird.
